Emotional Response as a Measure of Liveness in New Musical Instrument Performance
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper we propose that the measurement of an audiences emotional response to the performance of a new musical instrument correlates with an expert judgment of liveness. An initial experiment has shown a strong positive correlation between the two, indicating that audiences who have a positive emotional response to a performance also consider the performance as being more ‘live’. Observations are then made on what elements of the performances in our study contributed to or detracted from perceived liveness. Author

Use of Body Motion to Enhance Traditional Musical Instruments
This work describes a new approach to gesture mapping in a performance with a traditional musical instrument and live electronics inspired by theories of embodied music cognition (EMC) and musical gestures. Considerations on EMC and how gestures affect the experience of music inform different mapping strategies. Our intent is to enhance the expressiveness and the liveness of performance by trac...

Dance music superstar Deadmau5 and the improvising guitarist Derek Bailey represent, through their writing and practice, two very different approaches to performing live. By critically considering the practice of live coding in relation to these divergent approaches, we discuss live coding with regards to where the liveness lies and how the laptop and soware are treated as a musical instrument...
متن کاملRouages: Revealing the Mechanisms of Digital Musical Instruments to the Audience
Digital musical instruments bring new possibilities for musical performance. They are also more complex for the audience to understand, due to the diversity of their components and the magical aspect of the musicians’ actions when compared to acoustic instruments. This complexity results in a loss of liveness and possibly a poor experience for the audience. Our approach, called Rouages, is base...
